to the rest of the world, if you look at germany, uk, japan, france, all of whom have very strong gun regulations, we have more gun deaths in one week than they have in an entire year, and the incidents -- the number of times in which guns inside a home are used for self-defense are exceedingly small, on the order of maybe 1 in 15, 1 in 20 as compared to the number of times when a gun is used either for suicide or a homicide. anybody that looks at the data here is quite clear that on the whole, particularly things like assault weapons, create far, far more kor nage in th carnage in this country than they prevent. to a large extent the reason why i think progressives have not been able to mount an effective campaign for sensible gun laws, it's been a failure of the progressive movement, and i think that will now change with progressives. they must realize they have to make this an election issue. all of the polls show that the public is widely in favor of sensible gun regulations. i will point out what i said on friday. president clinton after columbine when we were meeting in the oval

%. what we saw was the recession expanding. spain, italy, the uk, all found austerity taking its toll even more as unemployment continued to rise in some of those countries. even the large country, the economic powerhouse germany found its slelf slowing down. the root cause of it all was the inability of the european governments to come to policies to get growth started again. towards the middle and end of the year they did, but the tale was style there. very much austerity again and again. perhaps if there was only one change that took place as we moved into the fall and into the winter. it was the realization that most of these countries could take no more austerity. social welfare having been cut, health care cut, unemployment, growth virtually nonexistent. now the talk is not of more austerity, but how to get growth started again across the contine continent. suzanne. >> thank you, richard. >>> christmas, of course, is a time of giving, but there are many struggling families in boston that couldn't aafford to get their children he anything. this year for almost six decades help kamt no

they weren't replaced at all so you didn't end one that productivty benefits. this was also the case in the u.k. where they've seen that sort of dwerjens so when you look at the difference between productivty of the public and preist sector, it's technology. private sector has been able to harvest the productivty benefits of technology to take cost out and take it out in a pretty radical way. and that just hasn't happened here. i hold a little bit more hope for mobile in this regard which i think mobile has an opportunity to be more trance formative because people will interact more with government and we've goten smarter about that sort of thing. but we have to start closing down systems which i don't think happened to tay great extent. >> i'll just give you my experience of an account executive before i came to congress as well. agencies focus on their buments and it is the nature of man that people do not like to -- you get your savings and you don't get the benefit of those savings, they go to somebody who isn't doing the same kind of thing. so the nature of government makes this difficult
